A Creative Beginning...

Owner with her husband

About Me...

My name is Melinda. I am the owner and designer of My Mom's Mums. Originally from the mountains of North Carolina, where the majority of my family still resides, my husband and I moved to Texas in the summer of 2013. I am the proud momma of 3 adult sons and one son still in high school. I am an RN and love spending time with my hubby, kids, and, on occasion, my ornery cat. She is also known as the Project Manager.

My love of all things crafty began early in life. Some of my fondest memories from childhood include making salt dough ornaments and painting ceramic figures with my mom and grandmother. They passed on the love of handmade gift making. Both my mom and grandmom are very talented painters, crafters, and seamstresses. I am so fortunate to have such an amazingly talented family. Growing up, I remember helping my parents on the weekends with small building projects, home improvements, and interior painting/ wallpapering. Having little home improvement projects to do makes me feel like home.

I began making diaper cakes and bridal shower decorations for friends and family, early in my crafting career. This blossomed to a short stent of cake baking & cupcake making craziness. Fast forward through the years, I settled into my true crafting love... with my glue gun.

Just a Girl and Her Glue Gun...

In the summer of 2013, my family and I were transplanted to the great state of Texas. I have always been a “crafty” and creative lady so, seeing my first Homecoming game at the Berry Center in the Fall of 2013, I was instantly hooked. A larger than life tradition that students and parents alike were excited to take part in every year? Sign this girl up! All I had to do was find a crafty Texan mentor. Enter my friend Shauna. She is one of the most talented decorators/ crafters I have ever met. We instantly connected and she showed me the beauty and tradition of Texas Homecoming Mums.

I spent my first Texas homecoming year in 2014, learning the traditions and styles by volunteering with my sons' high school mum making organization. There, I learned the grass root basics, current trends, and some tricks of the trade. At the end of the season, I found out that my son was telling his friends that "My Mom" was making mums. Thus, the idea struck! My Mom's Mums was born.

I spent 2015 making mums for two of my sons' dates, a handful of their friends, and some folks that heard about my endeavor via word of mouth. At Christmas time, that same year, I decided that I would take the plunge and apply for my business license. Best business decision, EVER!

2016 became the year of new beginnings. I have never been so happy in my crafting life. A fun activity that I can use hot glue AND glitter?!? YAY! I’ve been making mums and garters in the Texas tradition ever since.

In 2020, I joined the esteemed group of Mums, Inc. which was "founded on the principles of sharing and professional growth within the Homecoming Mum industry". This group of ladies and gentleman are a supportive collective of the best and brightest minds, elevating the Mum industry. We are comprised of some of the largest and most talented designer mum makers in the state of Texas.  "Founded as a Facebook group in 2012, we came together to discuss trends and supplies. Over time, we developed more than just tips. Focused on a professional community of respect and sharing, the ultimate goal of Mums, Inc. is to unify the Homecoming Industry to, not only keep the tradition alive, but to bring professionals together to better the industry as well".
